ADMISSIONS WAITLIST FAQs

About the admissions waitlist

Whether you’re already on our waitlist or still in the process of making your plans, we’re here to provide the information you want and need. Keep reading to find answers to some of our most frequently asked questions about the IU Bloomington admissions waitlist.

Yes. Only students who accept a space on the waitlist will be considered for admission as spaces for the fall become available. Eligible students will receive an offer to join the waitlist via email and will have two weeks from the receipt of that email to accept the offer. Students who accept their spot on the waitlist will be notified of a final decision no later than July 1, 2024.

While waitlists can mean different things at different institutions, students on the waitlist at IU are not assigned a numeric value or specific place on the list. Just as with the admissions process, we consider a student based on multiple factors within their application. This is because the spaces that become available are not identical, but instead call for students from different majors, locations, academic profiles, etc.

If you would like to explore entry for spring 2025, we recommend that you accept your spot on the fall 2024 waitlist first, and then email admswait@indiana.edu to learn about your next steps.

If you are interested in attending another university for the entire 2024–2025 academic year and transferring to IU in fall 2025, please visit our Transfer Applicants page and contact us if you have any questions.

We want you to earn your degree from IU and are ready to help you stay on your path. If you do not want to join the waitlist, we can talk to you about enrolling for the spring term or transferring to IU in a future term. Contact us at admswait@indiana.edu to begin these conversations. If you decide that you are no longer interested in attending IU, you can cancel your application by completing the cancellation form.

If you submitted the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by IU’s April 15 priority deadline, you will be given full consideration for financial aid. Information regarding your financial aid award will be made available before you have to confirm your attendance to IU. Once you are admitted you will be able to access your financial aid summary at go.iu.edu/awardsummary.

To ensure that Indiana University receives your information, make sure you list our federal school code on your FAFSA: 001809

You will be able to apply for housing as soon as you are admitted. Information regarding the availability of housing, not necessarily a specific assignment, will be made available before you have to confirm your attendance to IU. To learn more and review housing options at IU, visit IU Bloomington’s housing page.

Once we receive your intent to enroll and know that you plan to attend IU, you will receive an invitation from the Office of First Year Experience Programs to reserve your New Student Orientation date.

You will be able to register for classes at New Student Orientation. To be invited to New Student Orientation, you will need to declare your intent to enroll.
