Welcome to IU Bloomington! We're looking forward to helping you get off to a great start during your first term. Follow these steps to get started!
Start preparing for your first term of classes
- Set up your IU computing account and email account
To create your computing account you'll need your University ID number.
Your University ID number was included in the email that notified you of your acceptance.
You must set up your computing account to:
- Schedule New Student Orientation (where you'll also schedule your first semester of classes)
- Apply for housing (if applicable)
The computing account and email account are different than the account you created to apply. If you already created your IU computing account to check your application status, you still need to set up your IU email account.
Creating your account
If you did not set up your IU computing account to check your admission status, follow all the steps listed below. If you have already been admitted and just need to set up your email account, follow steps 1, 2, and 4.
- Go to Create My First IU Account in One.IU and click “Start.”
- Enter your last name, date of birth, and University ID number in the fields provided. Then click Continue.
- Read the Guidelines for Appropriate Usage, which are rules and policies for IT account use at IU. After you have read the Guidelines, enter Yes to agree these policies. Then click Continue.
- From the available options, select to receive your IU email from Umail (Google). A Umail account is similar to Google Gmail. Click Continue. If you have already set up your IU computing account, you will be directed to a screen that says Done. It will show you the security questions that you selected when you previously completed steps 5-9.
- Enter the passphrase you want to use in both fields. For information on selecting a valid and secure passphrase, see About your IU passphrase.
- Enroll in the Passphrase Self-Service. If you forget your passphrase, this tool will enable you to reset it yourself without having to contact the UITS Support Center for assistance.
- Once you have entered or selected at least three questions and answers, select Done to complete your enrollment in the Passphrase Self-Service.
- You will want to save this information. You will need your account information each time you log in to your IU computing account. You can save it as a PDF, or select Page Print if you want to print a copy of your account information.
- Select Exit. It may take up to two hours before you can log in to some services.
What to do if you have forgotten your ID or other information
- Forgot your 10-digit University ID number? If you are an ACP student, use the Information Recovery Form. All other students should first try the Student Self-Service University Lookup Form. If you still need assistance, please email the Office of Admissions at email@example.com. (In order to help you, we will request additional information.)
- Forgot your username? Contact the UITS Support Center.
- Forgot your passphrase? Reset it here.
Please note that if you have ever previously been enrolled in or participated in a program at any IU campus and were given a 10-digit University ID number and username, you will use the same ID number and username to access your IU computing account (or use the steps above to set up your computing account if you have not already done so).
- Sign up for New Student Orientation
All new students are required to attend orientation, which is where you will register for classes. All admitted students will receive an invitation to New Student Orientation.
Make your reservation as soon as you receive your official invitation!
- Apply for housing (if applicable)
If it's your first semester at IU Bloomington, you are required to live on campus, which is good news because it's the best way to plug into a community of people and start making friends.
There are some exceptions to this requirement.
The housing contract and application form are available on the RPS website. Your housing preferences will be given priority based on the date your application is received.
The application fee
The housing application fee is $200.
Please read all contract terms and conditions carefully, especially in relation to cancellation.
- Review costs and fees
Official tuition rates and fees are always available for you at Student Central. That includes complete billing and payment information and details on how to set up a personal deferment—or installment—plan.
- Send your final transcript
If you have work in progress, we need an official transcript.
To maintain your status as an admitted student, you'll need to:
- Have your college and/or high school send us a final, official transcript. If you have course work in progress, send your transcript as soon as it is available.
- Maintain your high level of academic performance.
- Familiarize yourself with Student Central
Student Central exists to make registering for classes and applying for financial aid easy.
Although you'll register for your first semester of classes during New Student Orientation, you'll use Student Central for the rest of your college career. It's your resource for staying on top of important class registration and financial aid deadlines.
It will show you how to do things like:
- Register for class
- Submit work-study documents
- Manage your financial aid
- Update personal information such as your name and address
We suggest bookmarking the home page. It's a resource you'll want to keep referring back to.
- Grant third-party payer access to parents or guardians
If someone is helping you fund your college education, make it easy for him or her to do it.
Let your parents (and whomever else you choose) set up e-bill notifications, pay bills electronically, and view bursar account details. Student Central has easy instructions for you to set up an authorized payer.
- Set up your MyHealth Patient Portal
Gain access to a number of online IU Health Center services.
Once you set up your MyHealth Portal, you can also complete your required Health History Questionnaire, which will save you about 15 minutes of paperwork at your first IU Health Center visit.
- Submit your immunization form
Indiana state law requires all new students to submit immunization data. Before your first day of classes, you must complete and submit the Online Immunization Compliance form, where you will be asked to provide dates and documentation of immunizations for the following diseases:
- Measles/rubella (MMR)—two doses required
- Rubella/German measles (MMR)
- Mumps, tetanus (MMR)
- Tdap—received within the last 10 years
- Varicella/Chickenpox—two doses required
Religious exemptions, contraindication, or proof of disease history are accepted.
- Register with Disability Services
Let us know if you need special accommodations to help you perform at your best. Register with the Office of Disability Services for Students (DSS) as soon as you've been accepted at IU Bloomington.
Whether your condition is physical, medical, learning related, psychiatric, or a temporary disability, DSS will help you achieve your academic goals. Note that services do not automatically transfer from your previous school; you must apply for services at IU. Approval for accommodations on placement tests does not automatically qualify you for services during the academic year.
Contact DSS at your earliest convenience. They'll meet with you during New Student Orientation to ensure that services will be in place when the academic year starts.
- Defer your acceptance
If your plans change, you can defer your acceptance for one semester.
Here are our policies for deferring your acceptance:
- You can defer your entry for up to one semester; after one semester has passed, you'll need to reapply for the term you plan to attend.
- If you choose to defer your admission and then take courses at another postsecondary institution, you are required to submit new transcripts and your application may be reviewed again based on any new academic information.
To defer, fill out the online deferral form for domestic freshman and transfer students at least two weeks before the start of the term for which you originally applied.
