We’re excited to welcome you and your student to the IU community. With more than 800,000 alumni worldwide, Hoosier pride runs deep—and you play an important role in your student’s transition. The information below will help you feel prepared and connected as your student begins their IU journey.
This is when you show your Hoosier pride
Attending orientation
Our orientation experience is designed to help your student start strong—academically, socially, and with the right resources. Encourage your student to check their IU email regularly so they don’t miss important next steps.
Guest access and updates
After your student makes their reservation, they may be able to grant you guest access in the Orientation Portal so you can view details and receive key updates.
Making a reservation
When students make their reservation, they’ll see the options available to them and select the choices that best fit their academic area and needs. Their Orientation Confirmation page will include additional details (arrival instructions, in-person lodging information when applicable, preparation steps, and more).
Joining as a parent/supporter
If your student attends a virtual program, you’re welcome to join alongside them (there is no limit on the number of supporters for virtual programs).
For in-person programs, we encourage families to bring 1–2 supporters due to space limits. Please wait to make travel plans until your student has finalized their reservation.
You can find more information about the Foundations of Orientation programs schedules to learn what your student—and you, if you’re attending—can expect.
If you can’t attend
Don’t worry—many supporters aren’t able to join live. You can still stay in the loop by exploring the New Student Orientation Resource Center, which highlights key IU offices, services, and tools that can support your student throughout their first year.
