About

The Department of Central Eurasian Studies (CEUS) offers a comprehensive program on the study of Central Eurasia, the vast heartland of Europe and Asia. Students are introduced to the area as a whole and specialize in one of the major regions within Central Eurasia.

The Master of Arts (M.A.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree programs consist of two interconnected elements: a language of specialization (LOS), which gives a student access to the culture of a given region through the voices of its people, and a region of specialization (ROS), which includes courses on various aspects of the region's culture.

The language of specialization may be any language offered regularly in the department, including Finnish, Estonian, Hungarian, Turkish, Persian, Uzbek, Uyghur, Mongolian, and Tibetan and other languages, such as Kurdish, Kyrgyz, and Kazakh, if permitted by the student's Graduate Advisory Committee.

Some regions and languages such as the Siberian region (including the Buryat, Evenki, Yakut, and other languages) and the Volga-Kama region (including the Mari, Mordvin, and other languages) may also be available as individualized specializations at the Ph.D level.

CEUS also offers a dual M.A./M.P.A. degree with the O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs, a dual M.A./M.B.A. degree with the Kelley School of Business and dual M.A./M.I.S. and M.A./M.L.S. degrees with the Department of Information and Library Science.
